Merchandising:
Merchandising is the department which mediates marketing and production departments. It is the methods, practices, and operations used to promote and sustain certain categories of commercial activity. The word “Merchandising” means the persons specially involved in garments trade. The term merchandising has been derived from the merchandise. Merchandise means goods that are bought and sold.

Merchandiser:
Merchandiser is a familiar word in any type of export business. They operate merchandising department. They are the key person to procure order. We can define them as, “The person who is related in merchandising is called merchandiser”. Actually merchandiser works like a bridge between buyer and seller. The main role of garments merchandiser is to collect garments export order, produce the garments, export the garments and earn profit. To perform those functions successfully needs lot of knowledge, experience and tremendous effort for a merchandiser.

Function of a  Garment Merchandiser:
  1. Fabric requirement calculations.
  2. Developing new samples, execute sample orders
  3. Costing
  4. Programming
  5. Raw materials / Accessories arrangement
  6. Production scheduling (or) route card drafting
  7. Approval of various Process, Pattern and size set
  8. Pre production follow up
  9. Meet Inspection Agencies
  10. Production controlling
  11. Identifying shortages and make arrangement for the shortages
  12. Following quality assurance procedures, quality control procedures
  13. Monitoring the in-house, sub-contractors and junior activities
  14. Buyer communication
  15. Communication with sub-contractors, processing units & other 3rd parties
  16. Proper reporting
  17. Highlighting to the management
  18. Record maintenance
  19. Developing samples
  20. Placement of orders to suppliers
  21. Taking measures for consistent production
  22. Taking preventive action to maintain the targeted performance in all areas of activities
  23. Attending meeting with superiors and furnishing the required details about merchandising
All the main functions, mentioned above are important but the procurement of yarns and accessories are most important as because there are many technical parameters involved in specification in this area.
