How to Become a Good Garment Merchandiser

Merchandiser:
In export oriented apparel industry, merchandiser is the BRIDGE between the management (or) industry and the buyer. He have to look after every job like buying the raw material (which is requied to finish the product), making the garment, finishing the garment, documentation(over all view), finally shipping. He is the responsibility person to make the product. The merchandiser who creats a good relationship in between exporter & buyer.
Merchandising in Garments business is an elite and technocrat profession for educated people. Merchandiser played a very vital role in Garments business, in fact he is the pivoting person for whole business who is protecting the interest of Factory and Buyer as well.
Garments Merchandising is a critical and systematic works, which a person must understand and perform with in a set of work frame, as such they need some institutional knowledge otherwise it may not be possible to do efficient merchandising without knowing Yarn, Fabric, Color Standard, Lab-dip, Samples, Accessories etc. So any body will be attending this Workshop will have a clear understanding on Merchandising and Role of Merchandiser.

Requirements to be a Smart Merchandiser:
Communication Skills
Merchandising must be required good communication skills. From negotiating with manufacturers to getting your marketing message out to customers, there is ample opportunity to exercise the power of communication in the merchandising field.

Forecasting Ability
While more methodical than fortune telling, merchandising does require forecasting ability in many sense. A thorough knowledge of trends of the previous season and an awareness of current industry developments will serve you well in a merchandising career.

Analytical Ability
Problem solving and analytical ability also comes in handy in this field. A good sense of style would be an obvious help. However, a merchandiser must also determine how things fit into a budget, and whether they meet the functional needs of consumers. Other criteria may also influence merchandising decisions, so a merchandiser will need to be able to analyze a complex set of issues and stand behind his/her choices.

Proper Knowledge on Textile
Good knowledge of Fiber, Yarn. Fabric, Dyeing, Printing, Finishing, Dyes and chemicals, Colorfastness, Garments production, etc. This knowledge can be acquired through both reading and practical experience. Apparel Makers’ blog would be your good choice for current industry news and information.

Good Concept on Raw Material
He should have clear conception of the usual potential quality problems in the garments manufacturing. Good knowledge of the usual raw materials inspection systems & garments inspection systems. Relationship with the testing authority working in Bangladesh and knowing their process can be a definite advantage.

Knowledge on Quota System
Knowledge of the quota system used in each of the producing countries’, duty rates, customs regulations, shipping and banking documentation etc.

Others Requirements:
  1. Ability to work on your own- AKA Personal Responsibility.
  2. Reliable Transportation & Childcare
  3. Digital or Cell Phone Camera- You may be required to take pictures of completed displays for the vendor. These are usually sent by email.
  4. A Credit Check And/Or Drug Test- some stores require EVERYONE who works there to have a credit and/or drug test for security reasons.
  5. Initiative especially when you’re starting out. YOU are responsible for finding your own work. DON’T get scammed by people selling lists or info that GUARANTEE jobs. It doesn’t work that way.

A Merchandiser don’t need:
  1. A Bad Attitude
  2. To Pay For Legitimate Jobs Or Information
